JDBC connectivity to third party databases

[] [] [] [] []

Symptom

iViews based on JDBC systems are not working (no data is retrieved from the third-party database).

Other terms

Connector, DataDirect, Driver, Connectivity, Database connection

Reason and Prerequisites

From NetWeaver 7.2, connectivity to third-party databases is not provided out-of-the box.
SAP NetWeaver 7.0 and Composition Environment for SAP NetWeaver 7.1 supported JDBC iViews and applications using a generic third-party database driver. The driver connected to all third-party databases supported by SAP (e.g. Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, DB2). Since the supported third-party database vendors provide JDBC drivers with the same or improved functionality, SAP decided to remove the generic driver from SAP NetWeaver 7.2 so that the customer can implement database connectivity directly using the native drivers supplied by their database management systems.

Solution

You need to download the appropriate driver, or drivers, from the website of your third-party database provider and configure it to work with your NetWeaver 7.2 installations. Detailed, step-by-step instructions are available in this SDN blog – https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/weblogs?blog=/pub/wlg/13944 and how-to guide – https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/e0319850-ec0a-2c10-3d82-c3334d7cc665
For NetWeaver versions below 7.2 (e.g. 7.0X, 7.1X) – please follow detailed instructions as described in note #864823
